Product Overview & Installation Guide.

Flexible Slate Veneer is a natural stone veneer that can be applied to many different indoor and outdoor surfaces. It is light weight and flexible allowing it to be used in many applications including vertical and horizontal surfaces.

Each sheet will be different as every piece consists of a thin layer of real stone and no two stones are exactly the same. Flexible slate veneer is backed by a polymer composite, which most construction grade adhesives will bond to. Finish on the material will be natural stone on front; back side glass fiber/resin.

Standard Sheet Sizes: 24" x 48" (All colors)  and 36" x 96" (Multicolor only)
+/- 1-2mm length as well as in width of the sheets
+/- 1-2mm at right angle to be expected
Furniture: Commercial and institutional.
Retail Displays: Store fixtures and point of purchase displays.
Walls and Flooring: Interior and exterior.
Doors: The slate veneer is inherently green, and the lightweight construction gives a new decorative look for entry doors and interior doors.
Decorative Accents: The thin veneer opens limitless applications such as aircraft, pleasure ships, and RVs.
Architectural Cladding: The natural slate offers a unique new look for rail, yachts, elevators, residential ceilings, and exterior facades.
Note: Thin Slate Veneer is not recommended for flooring or countertop applications due to the thin soft nature of the stone veneer.
Flexible Slate Veneer is a real stone veneer, 1/16" thick, sliced from slate blocks and laminated to a fiberglass substrate. The rough split surfaces and the ever changing color variations in each layer make each leaf a unique piece and a treat for the senses. The weight of slate veneer is approximately 1/2 lbs per sq ft (approx 1.2 to 1.6 kilograms per square meter). Flexible Slate Veneer is produced with a fiberglass backing. As a result, in certain instances, a seam will be noticeable when thin Slate Veneer is used in backlit applications.
Flexible Slate Veneer can be applied over: concrete, ceramic, wood, metal, plywood, fiberglass, backer board, tile, dry wall, painted surfaces, MDF, Masonite®, door skins, cabinetry and many other substrates as well.
Each sheet consists of a thin layer of real stone. Meaning, each sheet will vary the same way natural slates and micas do. Some colors, like Copper, Terra Red, Multi-Color and Silver Shine are more standard in color but can vary in texture. Indian Autumn, Sanjayani White and Jeera Greeen can have a wide range of texture and color. These variations also add to the uniqueness of the stones. Thin slate veneer cannot be guaranteed to match panel to panel, so it is recommended that orders take into account future maintenance or re-fit possibilities.
Flexible Slate Veneer can be used the same way thin laminate type products are used. It will bend to a minimum radius depending on the stone color or type before cracking. With the assist of heat smaller radii can be achieved. Testing should always be done prior to any installation. It can be arched or bent inward or outward to meet a given look or architecture. Fiberglass strand are used in the makeup of Flexible Slate Veneer, which gives it strength and flexibility.
The stone surface of Flexible Slate Veneer, like most stone elements, acts as a UV inhibitor and will resist high sun conditions for years. When adhered to a substrate, Slate Veneer will handle thermal contraction and or expansion of most standard construction materials. Slate Veneer will handle both high temperatures and freezing without cracking.

Basic Installation

Slate Veneer installation can be easily done using many of the basic tools used in most tile work.
Prior to application it is best to clean, brush, and degrease any surface of dust or oils. Depending on the adhesive used, it may be necessary to prep the back of the Flexible Slate Veneer by sanding or scuffing the back to expose the fiberglass. Some adhesives may require the use of solvents or recommended primer by the adhesive manufacturer.
Time spent preparing the work area will pay off in a job well done. Preparation of the area to be covered and the layout of the Slate Veneer veneer sheets is the same as for natural stones or tiles. A preliminary dry fit of Slate Veneer veneers allows for arrangements and orientation of individual sheets, patterns, textures, and colors before final placement. It is recommended that each sheet be dry fit exactly where it will be placed on all surfaces. Numbering the sheets to track relocation before cutting and trimming will save you time.
Slate Veneer is laid out and cut with sheet metal shears. Cutting is simple because of veneer’s thin, flexible nature. Note the back of the material is scribed with a knife.
Flexible Slate Veneer can be also be used to create a tiled effect by leaving a grout joint between cut pieces. Sheets may also be butt joined for a minimal seam look. Due to the thin nature of Flexible Slate Veneer a narrower grout joint will produce better results. Test show the use of water based epoxy grouts work well to fill between the cut veneers. These epoxy grouts are also available in several colors to match the desired decor. On final clean up with a sponge, the epoxy will also seal and fill the Flexible Slate Veneer surface. If desired a deeper grout joint can be achieved by removing material just under the grout joint area.
Flexible Slate Veneer can be sealed with the same sealers used for slate, stone tiles, and wood. There are many sealers on the market with various recommended applications. Please test any sealer for the desired luster and penetration required prior to installation. For a list of known sealers please contact our office for the latest updates.
Pre-sealing the Slate Veneer veneer sheets prior to installation will protect the face from adhesives and grout during installation and handling.
Precautions must be taken when working with Slate Veneer due to the fiberglass composition of the backing materials. ALWAYS use the proper type gloves, goggles, and dust mask when cutting Slate Veneer. When using a saw ALWAYS be sure to take proper precautions to cover skin, eyes and lungs from fiberglass dust. When cutting Slate Veneer properly filter equipment exhausts when cutting with saws, grinders, or sanders. AVOID BREATHING SILICA DUST. This product when cut, drilled, or abraded produces dust containing Free Silica which may cause cancer or delayed lung injury (Silicosis) if inhaled. Work outdoors, in a well ventilated area, or use mechanical ventilation. Industry standards recommend a NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator for this type of material. If in dusty areas or where airborne dust exceeds PEL wear NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator. This product contains one or more chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer. See Material Safety Data Sheet for detailed information.
Know your adhesives; by understanding the specifics of any adhesives, much time and cost can be saved. All adhesives should be tested prior to any installation including consideration of moisture and temperature in the planned environment. If the application is outdoors, consideration to thermal expansion should be taken into account. Since Flexible Slate Veneer is only a veneer it must expand and contract the same as the substrate or delamination may occur. Where adhesive primers are recommended the bond should be test by the installer before final installation.

Recommended Adhesives
TL Adhesive™
Premixed grout and tile adhesive
Acrylic copolymer based tile adhesive
Polyurethane wood glues and PU construction grade adhesives
Wood, parquet, and outdoor carpet adhesives
Thick latex or acrylic latex type tile adhesive (use only where air drying can take place) poxy
Silicone (with primer only)
Construction grade multi-purpose adhesive,
Liquid Nails® type.
Polyester based gap filler putty (Bondo® type products)

The back of Flexible Slate Veneer veneers may require a filler type adhesive for some applications. The polyurethane wood glues work quite well for most applications to board materials by foaming slightly to fill gaps. These materials are not recommended for high moisture or wet application. For wet environments epoxies would be the best candidate. Contact adhesives are not recommended due to the uneven backing of Flexible Slate Veneer.
TXTR-LITE Adhesive, when cured, is a strong, non-sagging, flexible binder to most substrates. The unique adhesive blend allows the sheets of veneer to be adhered without sagging or slipping during installation. This adhesive can be used indoors or outdoors as long as water cannot get behind the sheets of veneer and there are no air gaps. Any installations are the responsibility of the installer and any application should be tested before final installation.
Adhesive Coverage - The standard coverage for TXTR-LITE Adhesive is 1 tube per 4 square feet. For rough surfaces like concrete block more adhesive may be required. Note: For veneer sheets with clefts and ridges on the back it is recommended to back butter (pre-fill) low areas before using TXTR-LITE Adhesive. To achieve minimal air gaps back buttering (pre-filling) veneer sheets will assure complete coverage of adhesive and will use more adhesive than standard coverage above.
TXTR-LITE Over Tile - When adhering over tile and other non-porous surfaces TXTR-LITE Adhesive is the only adhesive recommended and backed by Decorplastics.com. This adhesive will cure between two hydrophobic surfaces. Adhesive will tack within 2 hours and fully cure within 24 hours. Do not use air cure adhesives when bonding TXTR-LITE to tile or other non-porous surfaces as they may not cure properly.
Clean Up - TXTR-LITE Adhesive requires mineral spirit clean up to remove from tools and other surfaces. Please use proper ventilation and all recommended safety equipment when using mineral spirits. Mineral spirits are flammable and cautions must be taken to keep from flame or sparks. Do not use electric tools or heaters near or around any solvents. Please read all warnings on solvent containers before using.

TXTR-LITE Adhesive is sold by the box. One box contains 12 tubes of adhesive. Label on tube may differ.
Since Flexible Slate Veneer is a water proof veneer consideration must be given to the substrate it is applied to. In some indoor and most outdoor applications expansion/contraction must be the same to prevent delamination. Concrete and masonry substrates must be at least 28 days old. Hydrostatic pressure conditions and vapor transmission cannot exceed 3 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. (1,36 kg per 92,9 m2) per 24 hours using a calcium chloride test (reference ASTM)
A hand roller is recommended to remove air between Slate Veneer sheet and substrate. To properly roll out trapped air start in the middle of a sheet while firmly rolling out towards the edge. Do not press too hard while rolling as this may cause too much adhesive to push out. Proper back-filling and good rolling techniques will result in a solid hard surface. Do not use non-catalyzing (water vapor type) cure adhesives where the substrate is a moisture barrier. Non-catalyzing adhesive will not cure properly if applied between non-porous materials.
For best results a 3/16" notched trowel is recommended for application of adhesive on substrate. It is always best to back-fill or back-butter voids or depressions in the material before application to a substrate. Use a straight trowel for back-filling of voids on the Flexible Slate Veneer sheets. For continuously wet environments epoxies or polyester resin are recommended and must be tested before final use.
Prior to installation, user shall determine the suitability of the product for its intended use and user alone assumes all risks and liability whatsoever in connection therewith. ANY CLAIM SHALL BE DEEMED WAIVED UNLESS MADE IN WRITING TO US WITHIN FIFTEEN (15) DAYS FROM DATE IT WAS, OR REASONABLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN, DISCOVERED. NOTE: Flexible Slate Veneer is not recommended for commercial flooring or countertop applications.

Floor Installation

Flexible Slate Veneer can be used for flooring with the proper adhesive and application techniques. Since Flexible Slate Veneer is not a thick solid stone it is not recommended for high traffic areas. It can be used for low traffic flooring areas such as residential bathrooms or where wet traction is required. Some colors of Flexible Slate Veneer offer better traction than others. For example Silver Shine or Jeera Green will have more texture then some of the other softer slate colors. Sealers will have an effect on the traction of the surface of each Flexible Slate Veneer color. Therefore, it is recommended that various sealers be tested prior to final installation when considering Flexible Slate Veneer for flooring.

Flexible Slate veneer can be also be used to create a tiled effect by leaving a grout joint between cut pieces.
For new installations Flexible Slate Veneer is best adhered over most standard subfloor materials such as cement board, and backer board usually in the ½" to ¼" thickness range. Using a layer of cement board or backer board over wood floors will result in a more solid feel to the finished floor. Flexible Slate Veneer will also offer a protective resilient surface inherent with the stone face and fiberglass backing. This can further help with crack prevention in some cases.
